IDEO SHANGHAI WORKING AREA

IDEO SHANGHAI WORKING AREA

Shanghai \ 2017 \ 200 sqm \ office

Sometimes, design does not have to always rely on adding new things, but simply reorganizing to clear up new spaces in quantity and quality.

In phase three of IDEO’s renovation, the periphery, window facing spaces, are reorganized to be one continuous, colored, and dropped ceiling spaces to give more intimacy and defined spaces for the designers, where they constantly shifting teams and desk layouts.

The spaces in the center become the raw, public, and admin spaces, flexibly mediated with soft curtains, all together simultaneously accommodating to individual and group habits, as well as addressing proximity and division in large working spaces.

Note:
This is a partial renovation on a previous design of the whole space, and tries to retain as much of existing floor and ceilings and open spaces.

Shanghai \ 2016 \ 190 sqm \ office

If the proportion is right, working environments become more comfortable, flow is positive, and good things come out.

In phase two of IDEO’s renovation, the range of meeting room and workshop spaces interlock to form a meeting node at a strategic office location, but the in-between spaces are carefully shaped, framed, or opened up to allow secondary interaction and break spaces, instead of just walls and corridors at the minimum escape widths.

NIMMAN SPA

NIMMAN SPA

Shanghai \ 2017 \ 225 sqm \ hospitality

How do you instill cultural specificity besides transplanting traditional motifs?

When Nimman Spa wanted to create a contemporary Thai spa for the younger generation different from traditional spaces, we convinced the client that modern Thai design does not mean just mixing in contemporary furniture within old Thai houses, like the many cafes along Nimman street in Thailand.

Instead, we created a key pattern with inherent Thai proportional tendencies, and used it to establish an overarching cultural ambiance from which objects, furniture, and details can evolve from and materialize into a total spatial experience.

We believe culture in the contemporary meaning is not defined by one element, but always between familiarity and surprise.

Note:
The space has since been rebranded as LANN SPA.

ICELAND HIKING CABIN

HIKING CABIN

Iceland \ 2016 \ 25 sqm module \ architecture

In the land of ice and fire, where landscape is rendered visible from the subtle northern lights, a hiking experience is shaped through a passage of time through the gradations of earth and sky.

The hiking cabin should place us in relationship with the world along that course as such.

Through carefully framed views from configurations of the private – public and the position of the body at rest, the shelter becomes a moment of pause, rest, reflection, renewed understanding, and a reminder to continue the journey once again the sunrise tomorrow.

Explorium is a retail center focusing on children’s clothing brands, learning workshops, and interactive playing spaces.

Using the specified brand colors and following the instruction to not alter the existing wall and ceiling profiles, Explorium’s entry and public spaces are given a clear identity color swath to unify the brand’s platform from the different retail brands and tenants.

PH PLUS SHANGHAI CENTER

PH PLUS SHANGHAI CENTER

Shanghai \ 2015-2016 \ 220 sqm \ restaurant

When a chain restaurant wanted to create an upgraded side brand, we sought to blur the brand recognition not from the logo recognition but from the experiential meaning.

The logo and brand reflected two key elements, color and space type, and we re-interpreted exactly that to create a consistent yet refreshingly new experience.

HUAXIN WISDOM MARK SHOWROOM

HUAXIN WISDOM MARK SHOWROOM

Shanghai \ 2016 \ 3200 sqm \ commercial

How can a space show as much as possible with doing as little as necessary?

When asked to design a showroom to showcase office park real estate to potential buyers, we took an entire office unit and demonstrated the potential of every floor, through only renovating selective key corners of each floor, instead of trying to do everything, everywhere.

All the renovated office spaces are directly usable as sales consultation rooms, can reflect a variety of office room and furniture types per the marketing requests, and all together will show the potential customers how their space can be in a before and after scenario in one setting.

This is joint design project with Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects.

IDEO SHANGHAI RECEPTION LOUNGES

IDEO SHANGHAI RECEPTION LOUNGES

Shanghai \ 2014 \ 150 sqm \ office

Working spaces should not be limited to a desk, and good ideas at work can come from anywhere.

IDEO’s two unused corridors upon entry, are re-appropriated into two waiting and casual working spaces that also double as the link between two disconnected ends of the office.

The lounges integrate a wealth of spaces in a seemingly small area, where a range of “rooms” in relation to the body’s different postures reminds people to get out of stagnant habits and comfort zone, that you can lie down or crouch, or that sometimes you just need a mental break for a different vantage point and perspective.

WOOD BLOCK HOUSE

WOOD BLOCK HOUSE

Taipei \ 2013 \ 110 sqm \ residential

An overly tight, four-bed-room river front facing apartment needs to open up its layout to the great light and views, and celebrate more natural materials.

The more functional spaces of entry, storage, kitchen, WC, and study are grouped as one wood block.

The remaining social spaces and bedrooms all free up to take advantage of the abundant light and natural views with pure, soft white walls and a diverse range of wood furniture and art work by local craftsman.
